Personally, I really enjoyed this project. I wish that I'd been able to talk to some of the South Korean students, but I really enjoyed reading the blogs of the Australian students. I don't think people around here are always aware of how interesting and different it is there. For example, I've always known somewhere in the back of my mind that the seasons there are the opposite of the ones here, but I never really thought about it until I read about them having their summer vacation in December and January. I also enjoyed reading about the various ethnic groups in Australia.
This must seem a bit strange for me to be saying, but I actually wish that we had done more blog posts (say, one every week?). I think that part of the reason I kept forgetting and doing them late was that we had such a long break in between posts that I completely forgot about it. It would also give us the opportunity to learn more about the people in our blog groups.

Yet again doing a late post...
I'd say that the population of the United States as a whole is very diverse. In fact, that's supposedly what this country's all about. However, people from different ethnic groups seem to settle in specific places, so small parts of the country are often not very diverse. This isn't as true in big cities like New York, San Francisco, and even Austin, to some extent, but more rural areas seem to have less diverse populations.
The U.S. tries pretty hard to promote understanding among people from different ethnic backgrounds, but much of its efforts are wasted. For example, schoolchildren are taught to accept different cultures and try to learn about them. But if these children go home to parents that are prejudiced against certain ethnic groups and spread that to their children, then what they have learned in school has little effect. I am not implying that this is all that common in America today. We've come very far in this area in the past century or so (just look at our new president-elect!). Unfortunately, we aren't finished quite yet.

Favorite Places...

I'm doing this post sort of early because I've realized that I can't trust myself to remember this kind of stuff.
It's hard to say where my favorite places in this country are because, sadly enough, I haven't been to very many of them. At some point in my life, I want to get around to visiting all 50 states, but that hasn't happened yet. It doesn't help that pretty much all of my family lives either in Texas or in North Carolina.
While I'm not actually overly fond of Texas, I love Austin. It's really an amazing city. Unfortunately, I don't usually get to see that much of it because most of my life takes place within a three-mile radius of my house. I think I take it for granted sometimes because I've lived here for most of my life and can't remember the city where I was born, but when I think about living anywhere else, I can't imagine it. Everywhere else just seems too... Normal. I don't think I could deal with that! I get kind of scared just thinking about it, and that is NOT an exaggeration.

Besides Austin, I'd have to say that I really like North Carolina. It's always summer when I'm there, and it is absolutely beautiful. It's a bit cooler (I'm talking about temperature here) than in Texas, and there are trees everywhere, and... I don't know. I can't really describe it, but it's amazing. I also have a lot of happy memories associated with it.

I also really like Arizona. Most people think of it a just a huge desert, and a lot of it IS desert, but I don't think they fully realize what a desert is. Arizona certainly isn't just a bunch of sand and cacti! It isn't really all that hot, either, especially in the north. And no-one that has seen the Grand Canyon could ever say that Arizona isn't interesting. I think that the Grand Canyon is one of those things that everyone who can should see at some point in their life. You really can't have any idea how vast and awe-inspiring it is until you've seen it and been down inside of it. I really can't find words to describe it.

I think that the last place I'm going to talk about is New York City. I've only been there once, but it was a wonderful experience. I'm not usually a fan of big cities, but it was so much more than that. There is so much to see and do there that I hardly experienced any of it. There's also a lot of history to be found there if you choose to look for it. This description of it isn't really doing it justice, but for some reason I can't think of anything else to say about it right now.

Terrorism

I really need to get better about keeping up with this kind of stuff. I didn't realize until today that we had a blog post due a week ago. So, uh, this is my second late post in a row. Sorry...

We do have terrorist attacks in this country, but not frequently. This is probably because for the most part, the leaders of our country are aware that there are many terrorist groups out there that want to attack the United States and have increased security because of that fact. Since most of these groups are from outside our country, increased security is effective. There have been no major terrorist attacks (if there have been any at all, either I didn't hear about them or my memory is terrible) within our borders since September 11, 2001, when suicide bombers attempted to hijack several planes and crash them into important buildings. Not all of their attempts succeeded, but the terrorists managed to destroy the World Trade Center and kill several thousand people.
Obviously, this caused quite a stir in the US and, in fact, all over the world. This was partially because terrorist attacks are very rare in the US compared to some other countries. However, this would have been considered a very large-scale attack even in a country where terrorist attacks were common. The events on September 11 prompted President Bush to declare a "war on terror" that is still going on today. The first thing our country did in this was was invade Afghanistan. In my opinion, this was justifiable because we believed that the terrorists responsible for the September 11 attacks were hiding there. However, in 2003 we all but abandoned that and invaded Iraq. Why? Apparently Bush thought there were weapons of mass destruction there. But there weren't. However, we did end up completely destroying their country and are still stuck there rebuilding. We are also spending a lot more money and resources there than we are in Afghanistan, where our mission to find the man that we believe to be responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11, Osama bin Laden, is nowhere near success.
I can't predict how much longer we're going to be involved in this war. Our new president-elect, Barack Obama, who will be sworn is next January, has said that he will do all in his power to end the war in Iraq, but there's only so much he can do. We can't exactly just leave.
Oh, right, motives for terrorist attacks. The way I see it, there are a lot of reasons people in other countries might hate the US. I can sympathize with them. Americans are lazy. We are something of a privileged people, but in general, we don't accomplish much when compared to people from countries that have to work harder. Our country uses 25% of the world's energy but only has 5% of the population. We are horrible polluters and aren't doing as much as other developed countries to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. There are other things to be said, but this post wasn't supposed to be an anti-America rant. I'm not anti-American. Although I'm sure some people reading this post are going to think I'm a freakin' terrorist...
In conclusion: Yes, we occasionally have terrorist attacks, mainly because a lot of the world hates us. For the most part, we prevent them because we have the resources necessary to enforce very tight security.

School

Terribly sorry this post is so late. I didn't remember we had a blog due until after midnight this... morning, so I decided that I'd wait and do this later after I'd gotten some sleep and was capable of forming coherent sentences.

Anyway: I am currently in 9th Grade and attending Anderson High School in Austin, TX. Maybe it only seems like this because it's the only high school I've ever gone to, but I think that Anderson is a fairly average school. Maybe a little better than average. It isn't in a really wealthy area, but it isn't in a "poor" area either. It seems to be a pretty good school when it comes to academics and the fine arts. I don't know about athletics, though. I only ever go to the football games (and only because of marching band), and the football team is pretty bad.

I guess I haven't mentioned it before, but I'm in marching band. I play the trumpet, which doesn't match my personality at all, but whatever. I'm not great at it, but I'm not bad either. Marching band is really fun, even if it IS ridiculously time-consuming. Yesterday was the first Saturday in three weeks that we hadn't had marching contest, and we have UIL on Monday.

I'm not really in any clubs at Anderson (actually, I'm supposed to be in German club, but I don't go to any of the meetings), but I thought I'd mention one of them anyway: the Gay-Straight Alliance. I think it's great that we have that, and I'd join it if they didn't meet on Wednesdays. You see, that's when German club meetings are, and I'm supposed to be going to those, so I don't want to join another club that meets on Wednesdays. For the record, I'm straight, but I fully support gay rights. If you disagree with me, please argue with me. That should be fun.

Illegal Immigration

In the U.S., there are a lot of illegal immigrants, mainly from Mexico. This is especially true in Texas (where I live) because it shares a long border with Mexico. A lot of people around here get really worked up about illegal immigration. Many of them claim that Mexicans are taking jobs that should belong to Americans. Some people even think we should build a 50-foot concrete wall all along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Personally, I don't buy a lot of that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that most of the jobs that illegal immigrants have in the U.S. are jobs that Americans don't want to do (maybe they think they're too good to do them?). That's why those jobs are available here (yes, I said available. I don't think that any jobs are being "stolen"). That's what attracts these people. Regarding the idea of building a giant wall along our border: the cost of that would be enormous, and I think most people realize that. We can't afford it. I think the fence that we have along most of the border is sufficient. I also think it might be bad for our country's relationship with Mexico and other countries. It's not like we're building a wall/fence along the U.S.-Canada border. Obviously, we're having problems with illegal immigrants from Mexico and not from Canada, but I still think some people might get the wrong message and think we're racist or something. I know that sounds a little crazy, but I'm just exploring all the possibilities.

What really bugs me is that all this hype about illegal immigrants from Mexico has given Mexicans that are here legally a bad reputation. Whenever a lot of people around here see a Mexican person, they automatically assume that they're an illegal immigrant. In addition, everyone is freaking out because (oh, horrors!) people want to sing the national anthem in Spanish. I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of people yell at me for this (for my whole post, actually), but I really don't see the problem with that. Isn't America supposed to be this wonderful "melting pot" of a bunch of different cultures? Why is it such a big deal if we don't speak English all the time? I agree, people should learn English so that they can read govenment documents and all that good stuff, but I actually think it's pretty awesome that the national anthem is being sung in another language!

All right, that's all I have to say about that. For now. You may now begin accusing me of being un-American or whatever you want.

Update: After thinking about this a bit more, I have actually come to the conclusion that I FULLY SUPPORT illegal immigration. Not with drug dealers and the like, but we really do need the illegal workers that we get from Mexico. Without them, our economy would be in even worse shape than it is right now. That would be pretty bad...

Okay, now you all get to find out what I did over the summer!

Let's see: I did pretty much nothing for a week and a half after school got out, then I went to nerd camp for three weeks. It was AMAZING! I met so many awesome people, and it was nice to be away from home for a while. I took a course on International Relations that was really interesting, too.

Anyway, camp was awesome, but getting back to Austin was awful. I got up at four in the morning to get to the Greensboro (North Carolina) airport. My flight to Atlanta left at 7:15, and everything went really well until I got there. My plane landed around 8:30 and my flight to Austin was supposed to leave at 11:15, so it was already a long layover. I got through that all right, but then they delayed the departure for half an hour because they had to get an airplane out of the "old hangar". When it got there, all the passengers got on, and we started on our way to the runway. After a while, I realized that we were just going around in circles. A few minutes later, they announced that there was a problem with the airplane's engine, so we were all just going to have to get off again! When I got back inside the airport, there was a thunderstorm. By the time that had cleared up and they'd gotten another plane, it was 1:30. Now that I read all that, it doesn't seem that bad, but I was alone, exhausted, and bored. It was torture.
Anyway, when I finally got back to Austin, I was exhausted--I'd only gotten three hours of sleep the night before!. When my mom picked she up, she informed me that I had to go see my grandparents and aunt. That would've been all right, but I also had to go to my friend's birthday party afterwards. Which meant that I had to go buy her a present, too. She also told me that we were leaving AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE THE NEXT MORNING for the beach.
I was at my friend's house until about 10:30, so you can probably guess how I felt the next morning. Then I had to endure two days of driving with my little brothers. They never shut up. It was fun once we got to the beach, though. We were somewhere on the Alabama coast (yes, it does have some coastline. Just not very much) and I picked up more seashells than I know what to do with.

Ummm... After that, I went to a creative writing camp. Then: SUMMER BAND. That was fun... 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening every day, out in the hot sun, being yelled at by my section leaders every five seconds... I'm actually only being a little bit sarcastic. It WAS really fun.

Then school started. That's pretty much it.

Ok, so I put a new picture up. It's probably not going to change for a while (if ever) because decent pictures of me just don't seem to exist.
I'm really not sure what to write about, so I'm just going to write about whatever crosses my mind.

I used to really love reading, and I'm pretty sure I still do, but I haven't been reading much lately. There just doesn't seem to be anything interesting around. A lot of people (mainly girls) my age are really into the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Actually, "really into" is an enormous understatement. They're completely obsessed. I used to really like the series, but now I can't stand it. I read the first book a little more than a year ago and loved it. This was before a lot of people had even heard of it. I read the second and third books and loved them even more. After that, there was a long break before the fourth book was released. During that time, I thought about the series some and realized how stupid it really was. I could go into that in more detail, but I don't feel like it right now. Maybe another time...
I really enjoy writing, and my friends say I'm pretty good at it (I don't agree, but that's not the point). My main problem is that I never really have any good ideas for stories. Everything I think of always seems really cliché, so I refuse to write it. That's another thing: I really, really hate overused story ideas. Sometimes, they're all right if they're presented in such a way that it's not obvious what they are, but most people can't pull that off.
That's all I really have to say right now. Oh, wait: if anyone has an idea for a story, tell me about it! I really feel like writing something right now, but I don't know what t
o write about.

Me

Hi! My name is Elizabeth McLean and I have just started 9th grade at Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. I'll be 14 years old tomorrow, which means that for a very short time, I'll be the same age as most of my friends! Then they'll all start turning 15 and I'll feel out of place again. Actually, a couple of them are already 15, so they'll be turning 16.

I have two younger brothers named Christopher and Michael that are both rather tall for their age. Christopher just started 5th grade and Michael just started 3rd. They're both very smart, although Michael sometimes has trouble in school because he gets frustrated easily and doesn't always pay attention in class. Both of them are really into sports, too. I can't relate to that at all, but I guess it's normal for boys. Here's a picture of them (hopefully. I'm not so great with computers.):

I'll post a picture of myself as soon as I find one that I like. That's probably going to take a while, so I'll give you a short physical description of myself: I have brown hair, brown eyes, and braces. I'm 5'7 (according to some website, that's about 170 cm) or a little shorter. I don't really feel like going into more detail right now.

Hey, would you look at that? It's past midnight and I'm still typing. Know what that means? Right! I'm officially 14! Actually, I guess I'm not really 14 until about 7:30 in the morning. Oh well.

I guess that's it for now. I would have written more, but I got distracted for a while and now it's late and I want to go to bed. I'll try to post some more tomorrow!

Correction: I know this says I posted it on September 6th at 9:33 PM, but it was past midnight here. I guess it was 12:33 AM. Or 00:33. Or is it 24:33?

Update: Ok, so I posted a picture, but it's kind of old (I don't have the glasses anymore) and the colors are all weird. I'll get a better one up later.
